Tuesday April 6th I will be grading each one of your wiki pages thoroughly.
You need to have completed at least 18 points worth of activities by April 6th.
I plan to add an additional column in your table where I can provide feedback on each assignment. If you have marked an assignment as complete please review it for spelling and grammar errors. Also, if you have created charts for comparing/contrasting a topic please include a summary of your charts. Many of you are using Google Reader and Delicious and have provided videos which are great. Please include a summary of how you are using these tools with examples or evaluate the tool pointing out features and flaws.
When writing about any topic on your page make sure to include links and photos. The more information you can provide on your page, the more interesting your page will be. Be sure to visit other student blogs and pages. You would be surprised what you can learn from your peers!
For those of you interested in Geocaching, we need to set a date. I believe after school would be better than a weekend. We would need a couple hours and there are several geocaches in Howard on the bikepath.
Keep up the good work!
I made a few changes!
Every student that is enrolled in the 21st Century Scholars course now has their own page on this wiki. Make sure you have a wikispaces account so you can sign in and edit your page. All you need to do is click on the sign in button at the to right corner and a window will open to enter a user name and password. I suggest you use the same user name and password as your gmail account.
Once you have a wikispaces account please "join this wiki". An email will be sent to my account and I will approve you as a member. This will take some time. Do not wait.
The reason you have individual pages is so you can create a portfolio of work for this class in one spot. You will be expected to keep a running total of your points earned at the top of your page as well as placing any essays, movies, blog links or multimedia projects on the page for all to see. It also provides a work space for groups projects. Make sure you personalize your page. Feel free to add photos, youtube videos, widgets etc... to help demonstrate your learning. Just remember to keep it school appropriate. If you have questions see me.
You must have your page personalized and a significant start on two activities by March 1st.
Here is a help video for those of you who have never edited a wiki page before.
So what's all this about? What have I agreed to do? This does not look or feel like a high school class. These are all questions each of you should be asking yourself right now and here are the answers:
This is all about breaking the mold of a traditional classroom setting. This is about challenging you to think outside the box, to be creative, and innovative. This is about exposing you to many challenges that will help prepare you and develop the skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century. This is about awareness, critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration.
You have agreed to participate in the weekly current events blog voicing your opinion, debating with your peers, sharing your thoughts, and adding additional links to support your opinion when necessary. You have agreed complete some of the chosen activities outside the regular school day. You have agreed to work together on projects and activities, to collaborate, share and discuss ideas. You have agreed to make choices and decisions regarding activities. You have agreed to take control of your learning and to be a 21st century scholar.
This is not a typical high school class. This class is an elective flex-credit course designed to engage you into a variety of tasks that you get to choose. There is a point system listed below that corresponds to all activities. In order to prepare you for the 21st century I want to expose you to all the relative themes currently being promoted by higher education, such as Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Global Awareness, and Technology. In order to complete the course and earn 1/2 an elective credit you must successfully complete 30 points worth of activities. You must complete a portion of the 30 points from each of the 21st century themes. The breakdown is listed below. The point system is not your grade! The points only reflect the amount of work required to complete the course. Grades will be determined by rubrics for each activity. Students should review the rubrics before attempting any of the activities so you know what is expected.
The goal of the 21st Century Scholars Course is to expose students to a variety of challenges that use and develop the skills necessary to be successful in a "flat" world.
The 21st century scholars course requirements are:
You must be willing to think outside of the box. This will not be a typical high school course and will require you to think on your own and problem solve.
Have an opinion, share your opinion. All students will be required to interact with each other on the current events blog. I will post a link to an article or video every Monday. Students will debate and discuss the contents of the article.
Students will use the Google tools such as Gmail, Google documents, and Blogger to complete chosen tasks.
Students must earn 30 points in the following topics to successfully fulfill all the requirements for the course.
Current Events Blog = 6 points
Creativity and Innovation = 4 points
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving = 4 points
Communication and Collaboration = 4 points
Global Awareness = 4 points
Information, Media and Technology skills = 8 points
Students will have a choice when earning the required points for each topic. Several options will be available or students will be able to submit a request to engage in their own activity/project that satisfies course requirements.
Students will be assessed using rubrics specific to each topic.
Students are permitted and encouraged to work together on many of the activities.
